A note before you shop

JOY COFFEE is a working demo of Joy Subscriptions, a Shopify app for selling on repeat.

Hi, I’m Philip. I work on Joy Subscriptions, and I built this store so merchants could stop reading about subscription features and just click them.

The beans, the prices and the checkout are real Shopify. The subscribe options, the free gifts, the bundles and the subscription page inside your Shopify account are Joy, set up the way I’d set them up for a small coffee brand.

Nothing ships. The card number is 1.

Below you’ll find a three‑minute route through the store, why each setting is the way it is, and the few things I chose not to fake.

The three‑minute route

Five stops. Each one is something your own customers would do in their first month.

  1. Pick a coffee and a rhythm

Open the Ethiopia single origin. Choose Buy 2 and every 4 weeks. Watch the price drop twice, and look at the gift row under the button.

    Open Ethiopia →
  2. Change your mind in the cart

Switch the delivery rhythm right in the cart drawer, or turn a one‑time bag into a subscription without going back to the product.

  3. Check out for real

Store password 1, card number 1, any expiry, any CVV. Use an email you can read: Shopify turns away .test addresses.

  4. Manage it like a subscriber

Sign in to the store’s real Shopify account with the email you checked out with. Shopify sends a one‑time code. Your subscription is waiting there: skip the next box or swap the coffee.

    Open My Account →
  5. Try to leave

Hit cancel on that subscription. Joy asks why before it lets you go, and that answer is what a merchant reads the next morning.

Under the hood

One buy box, four Joy settings

  1. The blue note is the plan description, written once in Joy and shown on every coffee.
  2. Buy 1 to 4 is a Joy volume bundle: 5, 10 and 15% off, Hario filters free at three bags, a mug at four.
  3. Subscribe & Save is one selling plan covering 22 products. Every 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 weeks. 20% off the first three orders, then 15%.
  4. The gift row is Joy perks. One gift rides along in each of the first three boxes, added to the order by itself.

None of this needed theme code.

Why it’s set up this way

Four decisions, and the numbers behind them

From 44,070 subscriptions on Joy stores, measured in August 2026.

73%

The gifts stop at box three on purpose

73% of cancellations happened in the first two cycles. The riskiest moment is the first automatic charge, when the card is billed and the customer clicks nothing. So this store front‑loads the good stuff: a bigger discount and a gift in each of the first three boxes, then it settles down.

1 in 5

Pause sits right next to cancel

Between the first and second order, 19.6% of subscribers paused instead of cancelling. Plenty of people leave over timing, and a pause answers that. In the account, skip and pause are one click from cancel.

3

The rhythm is editable in three places

Weekly plans had the highest churn of any frequency, 70.9%. Subscribers who adjust their frequency tend to stay longer. That’s why you can change it on the product page, in the cart and in the account.

15%

We didn’t go deeper on the discount

In Joy’s data, bigger discounts did not mean fewer cancellations. 15% recurring is there to be fair to the regulars.

Fine print

What I didn’t fake

A demo that hides its seams isn’t much use when you’re deciding. Here are the seams.

  • The build‑a‑box runs on Shopify discount codes (CLUBBOX10 and CLUBBOX15) for now. Joy’s native box works, this store’s product sync just hasn’t caught up.
  • My Account is Shopify’s own sign‑in, so you’ll only see a subscription there after you check out once with your email.
  • Checkout runs on Shopify’s test gateway. The orders are real in the admin, the money isn’t.
  • Gear from Chemex, Hario and friends keeps its real branding. We only rebranded the bags, pods and merch.

Questions merchants ask us

Do I need a developer to set this up?

No. Everything on this store is Joy settings plus a normal Shopify theme. The Joy team also sets up and migrates stores for free if you’d rather not.

I’m on another subscription app. Can I move?

Yes. Joy moves your existing subscribers and rebuilds your widget, so customers keep their plans and payment details.

What does it cost?

You can start for $0 a month. Current plans are on joysubscription.com/pricing.

Can my store look like this?

The look is your theme. The subscribe options, gifts and bundles work on any Shopify theme, and the subscription page lives in Shopify’s customer account.

P.S. If something on this store breaks, that’s useful too. Tell me what you clicked, right below.
